Here are your discussion questions:

Jem risks his life by going back for his pants so that Atticus won't find out what they had done, which , as he admits to Scout, was something they shouldn't have done. Scout doesn't understand Jem's behavior. Do you? What would you have done if you were Jem?

The evening after Jem and Scout find the knot-hole filled with cement, Scout discovers that Jem, who had ordered her not to cry, had been crying himself. Why do you think Jem is upset?

  1. I think Jem was upset because he liked the gifts Boo Radley was giving to him and Scout it made them feel connected to him in some kind of way. He also could be upset because he doesn't understand why someone would want to keep another person in a house like a prisoner for a mistake he made a couple of years back. Keeping them away from their freedom is not understandable to the kids.

  2. If I were Jem I probably would've told Atticus the truth about my pants. But I also understand why Jem didn't they were in front of a lot of town people it would not only be embarassing but humuliating as well. He didn't want Atticus to know what they were up to because Jem knew that it was a bad idea and they didn't have any business messing with another family. So if I was Jem I would've done the same thing because I wouldn't want Atticus to not trust me anymore.

  3. I think Jem is upset because he liked the gifts. Also, because Boo Radley got a chance to communicate with him. Not only that but I guess he figured he found out that Boo Radley come out of the house and that is what he wanted. Now he is sad because his brother is giving him a reason not to come out of the house and is taken his freedom away from him again.

  4. If I were Jem I would have done the same thing. His dad told him to leave that man alone. So, I would have played it smooth and gotten my friend to do the same for me make up a lie.

  5. Jem was upset about the knot-hole being filled with cement, because that was his only communication with Boo Radley. Also, because he feels that Nathan Radley which is Boo's oldest brother is taken his freedom away from him, and keeping him in the house like a prisoner for something he did in the past. In addition, I also believed that Jem liked the gifts Boo gave him.

  6. I think that Jem wanted to tell Atticus what had happened, but he was afraid of how Atticus would react to him doing something he had been told not to do and that was, "to stop messing with the Radleys". If I were Jem I would have told him the truth, because I would not want to risk my life going back to the Radley's home for my pants.

  7. All interesting comments ladies...
@Jalissa I found it intersting that if you were Jem that you would have actually told the truth...Sometimes fear keeps us from doing the right thing, and I believe that is why Jem is afraid.

Scout and Jem have a lot to learn in this story. As we finish reading, you will find that Boo Radley is not the only person who is imprisoned.
